Festival Organisers Thank Extra Effort by All

The organisers of Durham Christmas Festival wish to convey a big ‘thank you’ to everyone involved with last weekend’s three-day event, saying that it was extra effort by so many people that made the festival a huge success.xf 2016 f small

Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets which organises the annual festival together with Durham University, commented: “The festival is always popular, but with fairly mild weather for December, people came out and into Durham at the weekend, taking the opportunity to make the most of everything the festival and the city has to offer.

“Durham Christmas Festival is the biggest event in the city’s calendar that brings people into the city centre primarily to shop.  Dealing with such numbers requires lots of people going the extra mile and we thank everyone who was involved.  We’ve even had traders running out of stock one day, and working through the night to ensure they could restock for the following day’s market.

“Entertainment highlights during the weekend included one of our busiest Children’s Lantern Processions on Saturday, ably assisted by Durham Mini Police.  The Police Interceptor team attracted big crowds, and it was lovely to see visitors’ surprise when they found the Mums In Durham Choir singing in the city centre on Friday, only days after seeing them on BBC 2.  We can’t mention everyone, but a huge thank you to all our entertainers, traders, volunteers, staff and most of all to the visitors who made Durham buzz throughout the three days and who’ve supported not only traders at the markets but also the city centre businesses.”

Durham Christmas Festival featured five festive markets and a wide variety of seasonal entertainment throughout the city centre.  The festival, now in its 23rd year, will return in 2017 from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd December.  It is organised by Durham University and Durham Markets Company Limited.
